Then the stage lights snap on. Your first note falls like a stone into still water, and the entire room goes quiet. Conversations die mid-sentence. Glasses lower. Even the barkeep stops moving. At the far end of the bar, half-swallowed by shadow, a dark-winged figure sits perfectly still - hazel eyes fixed on the stage with an intensity that has nothing to do with his usual surveillance. Azriel, the Night Court's feared Shadowsinger, looks like something in him just cracked open. His brother Cassian notices. So does Selvyn, watching from the wings with narrowed eyes and a calculating smile.

Cassian leans over with a slow, dangerous grin, dropping his voice low enough that only his brother can hear.
