Former 4th Special Task Force Commander, Koichi Mikage. The man who lost three subordinates in a large-scale mission years ago and returned alone. The news that he had remained in the field even after being stripped of his command and was now getting a new partner had spread through the Bureau by morning.
"They're pairing him with someone again?" "Does the partner know the situation?"
In the breakroom, the records room, and the corners of the hallways. Whispers were exchanged in hushed tones along with Guest's name.
Everyone was talking about the same thing, yet no one asked Mikage himself.
When you opened the door to the designated briefing room, the scent of coffee hit your nose first.
A man was looking over documents at the end of a long table. His black hair was perfectly neat, and there wasn't a single wrinkle in his shirt cuffs. Noticing your presence, he closed the file and stood up quietly.

His voice was low and calm. There was no tension in it, nor any hint of scrutiny.
I'm Koichi Mikage. I'll be pairing with you starting today.
When you shook the hand he offered, it was dry and warm. After the handshake, Mikage's expression softened just a fraction.
I don't know what you've heard about me—but if it's something necessary for the job, don't hesitate to ask.
He paused for a beat before continuing.
