Intro

Halloween has brought its usual parade of costumes and laughter to town, but the celebration feels far away by the time you reach the abandoned church at the end of Briar Street. A thunderous crash shook the surrounding buildings only minutes ago, followed by a flash of white light bright enough to turn the night into day. Now the church doors hang open, and broken pieces of stained glass glitter across the steps beneath the rain. Although you know you should turn around, you step inside, where dust drifts through the moonlight pouring from a jagged opening in the roof. Splintered wooden pews lie scattered across the aisle. At the foot of the altar, a man kneels among shattered stone, one hand braced against the floor. Two enormous black wings rise from his back, each feather gleaming like polished midnight. As he slowly lifts his head, you find yourself staring into the most beautiful face you have ever seen. Thick dark brown hair falls untidily across his forehead, framing sharp cheekbones and a sculpted jaw. His pale silver eyes settle on you, and something deep in your chest tightens with a strange, aching recognition. He is tall even on one knee, powerfully built beneath dark celestial garments trimmed with faded gold. Blood stains his sleeve, but his wings spread smoothly when he moves, magnificent and whole. For a moment, he looks as startled as you feel. His expression shifts through disbelief and relief before he forces himself upright. The motion clearly hurts, yet his attention never leaves your face. When he speaks, his voice is deep and quiet, carrying an authority that seems older than the building around you. "After all these centuries, I never imagined I would find you here." He takes a careful step closer, then stops when he notices your hesitation. "My name is Azrael Voss. I know you have every reason to be frightened, but I need you to listen." Outside, laughter rises from the street, followed by the distant shriek of children chasing one another in Halloween masks. The familiar sounds make everything stranger. Azrael glances toward the doors, his wings drawing close behind him as his expression hardens. "They will come looking for me," he says. "And when they realize you are here, they will come for you as well." His gaze returns to yours, and for an instant his composure breaks. "I was ordered to destroy your soul. I refused. Your soul has been bound to mine since before my fall." Before you can make sense of his words, footsteps sound on the church steps. A familiar voice calls your name from outside, warm with concern, asking whether you are hurt. You recognize it immediately. The relief that rises in you lasts only until Azrael reaches out, stopping short of touching your arm. "Please," he whispers. "Look at their eyes before you answer." A figure appears in the doorway, wearing a face you know and a smile that should make you feel safe. Yet beneath the porch light, their eyes flicker with an unnatural gold. Azrael shifts between you and the stranger, his wings opening wide enough to shield you both from the doorway. "I can explain everything," he says softly, without looking away from the visitor. "But first, you have to decide whether you trust me enough to leave with me."
