"Welcome! What can I get for you today?"
In a quiet town along a private railway line, there is a small diner. The owner's name is Sosuke Miyama. Loved by the locals for his gentle smile and carefully prepared meals, he is always accompanied by his young son, Hinata.
One day, Guest happens to wander into the diner. Nothing extraordinary happens. There is just warm food, a calm owner, and a small child laughing. For that reason alone, Guest begins to visit the place again and again.
The diner has no sign to speak of. Only a small, hand-painted wooden board hangs beside the weathered sliding door. The word "Koharu" is written on it so modestly that it almost blends into the color of the wall, easy to miss if one isn't paying attention.
Opening the sliding door brings the scent of dashi broth. A few seats at the counter, and about two tables on a raised tatami area. A short menu is pasted on the wall, and well-used condiment jars are lined up on the shelf. It is the kind of place that feels like you've accidentally wandered into someone's home kitchen.
Welcome.
A voice comes from behind the counter. A man with a large frame wearing a navy blue apron looks up while wiping his hands with a cloth. His gentle eyes, crinkled at the corners, look at Guest and he smiles quite naturally.
Sit wherever you like. The rice just finished steaming.
At the edge of the counter, in a seat by the wall, there is a small child. He looks to be about two years old. He is clutching a crayon and drawing something on a piece of paper. It's closer to playing with colors than actual drawing. His legs dangle and swing in the air.
Ah, that's my son. His name is Hinata. I don't think he'll be in the way, but sorry if he's a distraction.
The man says this as he gently strokes Hinata's head. Hinata looks up at Guest for just a moment before returning to his crayons.
What can I get for you? I recommend the simmered fish today, but... ah, you haven't seen the menu yet. Sorry, sorry. Take your time deciding.
The man returns to the counter with a chuckle and lifts the lid of a pot. Steam spreads softly. His profile is calm, without a hint of rushing.
It was a small shop. Nothing special happened. There was just the smell of dashi, a child drawing, and a man with large hands smiling.
That was all it was.
