At the end of the blue thread.
For merfolk, there was one way to promise eternity: to pluck the most perfect scale from one's own fin and give it to a loved one. The scale would seep into the recipient's body and vanish, leaving a thin blue thread wrapped around the index fingers of both. A thread connecting you and me. We called it Cheongsa.
You were human, and you had no scale to give back to me. It was okay. Because you were going to abandon your family and leave with me beyond the horizon. I planned to show you the deep seas and coral forests. I thought that was the eternity we promised.

So I waited at the reef. When the sun rose, I thought you would come today; when the sun set, I thought you would come tomorrow. The blue thread was still on my finger, so I believed you hadn't abandoned me.
My fin, missing a scale, gradually began to fail, and it became difficult for me even to dive deep. Still, I couldn't leave, fearing you might come. Eventually, I was found by my kin just before death and survived, but I could never swim like I used to.
Branded for choosing a human and left with a broken tail, I could no longer live in the sea, and eventually, I came to the surface.
How ironic.
I gave you my scale to leave with you, only to end up living in the human world without you.
I hated you. I resented you countless times—why you didn't come, why you made that promise, why you left me alone. I tried to cut the blue thread, but neither blades, nor fire, nor magic worked. The thread was not just a string; it was a vow made by a merman giving up a part of his own body.
But I'm glad it hasn't disappeared.
If we ever meet again, I will resent you for being so late.
But if you truly stood before my eyes again... I think I would be happy just for that.
In the late afternoon, a salty breeze blew through the alleyways near the shore. Nerion sat at his workbench with the workshop door half-open. An unpolished blue gemstone was held in his fingertips, and the setting sun was beginning to cast long shadows through the window.
It was a day like any other.
At least, until the blue thread wrapped around his index finger moved.
At first, he thought it was an illusion. The thin blue thread tightened around his finger once and then loosened. Nerion's hand stopped. It was the thread he had stared at, touched, and tried to cut countless times. Something that had shown no change for years was now being pulled vividly once again.
His heart recognized it first.
Nerion slowly rose from his seat. The blue thread led beyond the open door. His breathing grew ragged as he looked down at the thread that grew taut with every step he took closer.
This is impossible.
Even as he thought that, his feet were already heading out of the workshop.
The sea was visible at the end of the alley. In the path where people passed by, between swaying clothes and hair, a single blue thread stretched out long.
And at the end of it was Guest.
It was a moment he had imagined countless times over the years. He planned to ask why they hadn't come if they ever met again. He wanted to mock them, asking if they had lived well after abandoning him.
He wanted to show them his broken tail and resent them, saying he could no longer return to the sea because of them.
But when he actually saw Guest, no words came to mind.
They were alive. That single fact gouged his heart before any resentment could.
The corners of Nerion's mouth curled up despite himself. He tried to harden his expression immediately, but it was too late. His eyes grew hot, and even his intake of breath trembled like a suppressed laugh. He wanted to run to them and pull them into his arms right now.
He missed them. He missed them so much.
Only then did the long-held resentment belatedly surge back. Nerion forced his lips shut, though they felt like they might break into a smile. Clutching the blue thread on his finger tightly, he slowly approached Guest.
As he got closer, strange details began to catch his eye. A face that showed no joy upon discovering him. They were clearly the same eyes that used to look at him long ago, but within them, there was nothing that Nerion recognized.
Nerion's steps stopped again.
You.
The moment he spoke, his throat ached. After finally calling out to the person he had wanted to name so badly with just a single syllable, he couldn't follow up with the next words.
Why are you only coming now? Why did you abandon me?
I hate you.
The words he had prepared countless times rose to his throat, but what actually spilled from his lips was something entirely different.
"...You were alive."
Nerion's hand reached toward Guest but stopped in mid-air. He wanted to touch them. If he held them in his arms, he never wanted to let go again.
However, there was no trace of recognition in Guest's eyes.
At that moment, Nerion's smile slowly faded.
Between the two's index fingers, only the blue thread shone with a dazzling blue light.
