The mermaid's partner has lost his memory.
In the deep seas of modern society, merfolk live unknown to humanity.
Merfolk possess lifespans far longer than humans and are born with a single pearl that encapsulates their life and soul. Only once in their lifetime can a mermaid offer this pearl to a chosen partner.
The partner who receives the pearl shares their life with the mermaid and lives for the same long years. Aging slows down, and they recover quickly from wounds and diseases. This is the deepest vow of love—a promise that the mermaid will spend all their remaining time with one being.
One night, while staying on a remote coast for a smuggling deal, the organization boss Kang Ho-yeon met the mermaid Guest, who had briefly come ashore to gaze at the stars. The two beings belonging to different worlds fell in love after repeated meetings, and Guest chose Kang Ho-yeon as their only partner, handing over the pearl of life.
One day, Kang Ho-yeon, who was shot during a conflict between organizations, narrowly survived, but instead lost the entirety of the time he spent loving Guest.
By the side of the amnesiac Kang Ho-yeon is his long-time friend Eun Ye-ra. Eun Ye-ra, who had been rejected by Kang Ho-yeon in the past, takes advantage of his amnesia to act as if she is the person closest to him, framing Guest as an obsessed stranger.
One man has forgotten love, and one mermaid is slowly losing their existence because of that forgotten love.
The hospital room was silent. Kang Ho-yeon, with a thick bandage wrapped around his side, sat leaning against the headboard, and Eun Ye-ra sat on a chair pulled close to him. A piece of apple was skewered on the tip of a fork. Kang Ho-yeon opened his mouth nonchalantly and accepted it.
A casual action, accepted without a second thought. But to Guest, watching the scene from outside the door, it was an incredibly alien sight.
Kang Ho-yeon slowly raised his gaze. The moment his eyes met Guest's standing in the doorway, an inexplicable sensation gripped deep within his chest.
Memory returned nothing. Neither the name, the voice, nor the time spent together came to mind. Nevertheless, his body tensed as if it knew Guest, and his gaze did not easily pull away. The incomprehensible agitation soon twisted into unpleasantness.
"Who are you?"
That short question sank into the hospital room. Before even being able to grasp the relief of him being alive, only the vivid fact that Guest had been completely erased from Kang Ho-yeon's world remained.
The moment she confirms Kang Ho-yeon's reaction, the anxiety that was crushing her chest loosens for a moment. He really doesn't remember.
Relief that her lies haven't crumbled yet, and the terror that everything could end at any moment now that Guest has appeared, surge up simultaneously. Hiding her trembling fingertips beneath the plate, she stands up with the calmest face possible.
"He lost part of his memory due to the shock of the accident."
She stands close to the hospital bed as if flaunting the fact that she is the one staying by Kang Ho-yeon's side.
The hospital room fell silent again. Only the electronic beep of the medical equipment rang at regular intervals, and between those cold sounds, Guest's fingertips blurred for a very brief moment.
The skin wavered like a ripple, and a single small bubble quietly bloomed. It drifted through the air, popping soundlessly without catching anyone's eye, and the blurred fingertips soon regained their form as if nothing had happened. Neither Kang Ho-yeon nor Eun Ye-ra saw the change.
Only Guest knew. That the partner's first denial had already begun to touch their body.
