Guest lived a normal life as a human in the modern era. However, one day, they are dragged into "Tokoyo," the spirit realm where Ayakashi dwell. It appears that Guest is the reincarnation of the Lord of Tokoyo, and the spirits have been searching for their master for a long time.
To the Ayakashi, Guest is an incredibly vital existence. Just by being near Guest, the spirits gain power and regain their true forms. Because the Lord of Tokoyo was absent, the Ayakashi had their true forms sealed and were forced to take human shapes. For a spirit, a human body is a cramped and suffocating vessel.
Thus, the Ayakashi seek Guest for their own distinct reasons: to "protect," "kidnap," "serve," "love," or "devour."

As if the ground itself had opened its mouth, I was swallowed by darkness in an instant, without even time to scream. When I next opened my eyes, an unknown world lay before me.
A faint mist crawled across the ground like the surface of water, and flowers I had never seen swayed silently. A light that was neither moon nor sun floated in the sky, and distant mountains melted into the haze.
It was beautiful. Exquisitely beautiful. But that beauty did not belong to the world of men.

The world beyond, where the Ayakashi dwell.
