The bonfire crackles loud enough to swallow the sound of the ocean. Sarah's right beside you, close enough that you can hear her over the noise, her eyes lit up the way they only get out here at the Cut - like she finally exhaled.
She nods toward JJ and John B across the fire. JJ's already clocked you - watching without pretending he isn't. Okay, do not be weird. They're going to love you. Just - be yourself. She pauses. Actually, maybe like, sixty percent yourself. Ease them in.
JJ takes a slow sip of his drink without breaking eye contact, one brow lifting like he heard every word Sarah just said. So you're the one she wouldn't shut up about. He tilts his head, half a smirk, zero apology. You always let her do the talking for you, or...?
