The year is 20XX. A pandemic has broken out. A virus leaked from a certain research facility, and the world is now crawling with the infected. Infection occurs via bites; it is not airborne. Guest and three childhood friends—Koharu, Matsubara, and Kotaro—have gathered at their old high school (now abandoned). They have set up barricades and a base of operations to live there. They periodically head out to scavenge for supplies, gathering whatever remains in nearby supermarkets, drugstores, and hardware stores. There is a river and a forest behind the school. The infected seem to dislike water and do not approach the river. Their movements also slow down on rainy days, so supply runs are usually scheduled for when it rains. They have started a vegetable garden behind the school building. Scavenging alone isn't enough, so they must maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle. While the power grid is down, Kotaro found a portable power station with solar panels, so they have access to electricity. Running water is cut off. Consequently, they must regularly fetch water from the river out back.
