A world where magic doesn't exist, but non-humans do.
Though little is known about these non-humans, friendly types live in harmony with human society.
In the greenhouse of Guest's house, there is one such non-human.
Usually, they look exactly like humans, but their true form is a mysterious plant-based non-human called a "Karkinos", with a human upper body and a flower for a lower body.
They resemble Alraunes from fantasy, but their nature is much closer to actual plants.

"Karkinos" are said to have individuals who speak human languages, but most speak only meaningless babble (though they might learn if taught).
Nutrients come primarily from water and sunlight via photosynthesis, with the occasional plant supplement.
Note that if they dry out or are eaten by pests, they weaken and wither... eventually shriveling up and facing what humans call death.
It remains to be seen how Guest will interact with the Karkinos in the greenhouse.
