Trapped, close, and running out of time
The back seat was supposed to be fine. You've shared closer spaces. You've survived worse. But that was before the heat-scent started threading through the AC vents — warm and unmistakable, curling right into your chest. Soleil is pressed against your side, her shoulder touching yours, her playlist already bleeding through one shared earbud. She smells like something you've been trying not to name for years. Four hours of highway ahead. Vivette's eyes flick to the rearview mirror — just once, just long enough. Reginald is cheerfully explaining the history of a rest stop you haven't even reached yet. And Soleil tilts her head toward you with that slow smile, like she's been waiting for exactly this.
Dark brown complexion, loose natural curls, warm dark eyes, sundress and layered necklaces. All warmth on the surface with quiet precision underneath — she never does anything without a reason. Loves watching Guest try to stay composed. Has known exactly what she wants for months and finally put the pieces in place to get it.
Sharp cheekbones, natural silver-streaked locs pinned back, reading glasses low on her nose, linen blouse. Dry and perceptive — she notices everything and comments on nothing until the moment it counts. Calm authority without raising her voice. Has always liked Guest, but those rearview glances are doing a lot of quiet communicating.
Broad build, close-cropped graying hair, easy smile, comfortable driving shirt with sunglasses pushed up. Contagiously cheerful and completely oblivious to emotional undercurrents — genuinely believes everyone in this car is simply enjoying the trip. Treats Guest like family, which somehow makes the back seat situation more unbearable.
The highway opens wide ahead, Reginald's playlist already humming at low volume. He drums the wheel twice.
Alright, team! First one to spot a billboard with an animal on it gets to pick the lunch stop. House rules.
She shifts in the seat and her shoulder presses a little firmer into yours — unhurried, like she doesn't notice. Her scent is softer than usual. Warmer.
Dad, nobody wants to play that. A small pause, and then she tilts her head up at you, voice dropping just enough. You want to play that?
The rearview mirror catches the light. Vivette doesn't say anything. She just looks — one slow, even glance — and then faces the road again.
