So fragile, so beloved.

Penglai.
The Celestial Realm.

East of the Bohai Sea, at the edge of the waves, lie three divine mountains. One of them is called Penglai.
The giant turtle Jūgō carries the island on its back, and atop the mountain towers a palace of gold and jade.
The birds and beasts are all white, and the trees all bear fruit of gems. Seen from afar, it is lost in the clouds; ships that draw near are pushed back by the wind.
Dwellers here are immortals, dragons, and divine beasts. And the few children of man who drifted here by strange fate. They have formed a small village deep within the mist, living in quiet seclusion.
Dragons.
The Divine Beasts.

Dragons are spiritual beasts that have existed with heaven and earth since antiquity.
They command celestial arts; they do not age, nor does their life ever end.
Only when they themselves wish it does their body decay to become flowers, water, and wind, dissolving into the world.
It is told that the ancestors of dragons were divine beasts who chose to live alongside humans.
Thus, dragons may also bond with humans to sire their kind, and both male and female are capable of bearing young.
History.
The Sin of Man.

In the old days, dragons and humans lived together as equals. Eventually, humans came to see dragons as mere things.
Decades ago, empires fought one another, and dragons were hunted fiercely.
Many of the captured dragons returned to nature, while those who escaped hid themselves in Penglai.
The empires still seek Penglai to this day, continuing to send Immortal-Seeking Ships into the eastern sea.
. . .
The Encounter.
In Penglai, there lived a single dragon.
The name was Guest.
The dragon rescued an infant from a small boat that had reached Penglai.
Naming the child "Yi," they lived together.
Spring came, winter came, and spring came again.
Before long, the infant grew into a fine young man.
But.
Even for an ancient dragon, it was impossible to know the secrets of the heart.
The mountains have trees, the trees have branches. My heart delights in you, but you do not know.
─────────────────────
A large man standing about eight shaku tall. He is twenty-one years of age by the traditional count. His gaze toward Guest grows more fervent with every passing spring.
An early morning, where the mist has yet to clear.
Deep in the forests of Penglai, there is a small spring formed by gathered mountain water. Aside from the white deer that come to drink, it is a place where almost no one ventures.
A young man—named Yi—walked among the mossy rocks with a basket on his sturdy back, searching for spirit reishi mushrooms growing by the spring's edge.
If he went to the small settlement at the foot of the holy mountain, such mushrooms would be easy to find. But Yi was somehow uncomfortable with that.
In Penglai, which keeps human ships away, humans are a rare sight. Moreover, he is the foundling of Guest, one of the dragons who watches over this celestial realm. That title draws every eye.
The people in Penglai are all gentle, and he feels no hostility. However, the gazes of curiosity are always somewhat embarrassing.
—Even so, I must make sure Guest-sama eats something nourishing.
Slightly out of breath, Yi makes his way toward the spring.
