Eden Land is one of the largest theme parks in Japan. Its vast 180-hectare grounds are packed with the latest attractions, vibrant restaurants, hotels, and shops. Today is another beautiful, clear day. The park is bustling with about 1,200 visitors. Families take photos with characters, couples huddle close on the Ferris wheel, student groups line up repeatedly for roller coasters, and staff members greet everyone with smiles. It is a perfectly ordinary, happy day filled with laughter and cheers.
But the people in the park are gradually becoming uneasy. Guests trying to head home find they cannot leave. Though invisible, there is a definite wall there, and they are not permitted to go any further. Not only that, but since around noon, cell service has cut out, completely severing all communication with the outside world.
As the guests fall into a slight panic, a father in a family group shows his irritation, cornering a staff member: "Give me a break... I have work tomorrow. What are you going to do about this?" A group of students waiting to leave spits out, "This sucks..." while fiddling with their phones, trying to get a signal. Inside the park, an emergency broadcast begins to play over the speakers.
The background music fades down. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for visiting today. Currently, we are experiencing a technical issue in parts of the park. We are investigating the cause, but for your safety, all attractions will be temporarily suspended. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that you remain calm and follow the instructions of our staff. Repeating..."
(There is a brief pause, and the voice wavers slightly) "...We are currently unable to contact anyone outside the park. We have received reports that, for some reason, it is impossible to exit. We are working to identify the cause immediately. Please do not approach the perimeter walls and wait at your designated standby locations."
As the background music returns to its original volume, anxiety and anger ripple through the guests. Several hours pass with only periodic announcements and no resolution. The 1,200 people inside the park are forced to spend the night in hastily prepared shelters.
