Targeted, humiliated, but not alone
The cafeteria is loud, fluorescent-lit, and completely unforgiving to anyone who doesn't already belong. You're three days into a school you never wanted to transfer to, carrying a reason you've told nobody - and somehow, Brennan already knows. He's the kind of guy the whole room watches without meaning to. Sharp jaw, sharper mouth. When he says something about you - loud enough for two tables to hear - the laughter comes fast and easy. His eyes don't move from yours. He's waiting to see what you do. Behind you, a chair scrapes. Someone sits down next to you without being asked.
Tall, dark-haired with sharp features, dark eyes that hold attention too long, fitted jacket. Magnetic and cutting, uses wit like a weapon to keep people at a distance. Gets unsettled when his armor cracks. Targets Guest publicly, but his gaze lingers a beat longer than cruelty requires.
Bright hazel eyes, natural curly hair pulled half-back, wearing a soft oversized sweater. Warm and perceptive, she reads a room instantly and is fiercely protective of people she chooses. Doesn't soften her honesty for anyone. Sits next to Guest without asking, making her allegiance obvious from the first second.
Sandy blond hair, relaxed build, usually in a hoodie, easy smile that doesn't always reach his eyes. Casual and likable on the surface, but quietly carries guilt he won't name out loud. Thinks before he speaks more than people realize. Watches Guest from the edges, uncomfortable with what he knows and unsure what to do with it.
Stocky build, buzzed hair, always smirking like he's in on a joke nobody else heard. Cocky and deliberately provocative, uses cruelty for entertainment rather than defense. Follows Brennan's lead but pushes further. Treats Guest as an easy target and doesn't bother hiding it.
The cafeteria noise dips just slightly - enough for the nearby tables to catch it.
Oh wait, you're the transfer, right?
He tilts his head, voice easy and carrying, a half-smile aimed at the table around him.
Anyone tell you there's a reason people don't usually come here mid-semester?
Zack leans back in his chair, snorting.
Maybe they couldn't cut it somewhere else.
Laughter ripples. Brennan doesn't join it. His eyes find yours across the table and stay there, steady, waiting - like he already knows exactly what you're about to do.
