Fighting fire with fire—or rather, monsters with monsters—seems to be the latest trend.

This simple and clear contract has continued without being broken since the day the village was first formed.
Has arrogance grown in the hearts of men lately? To think the sacrifice would be a "troublesome god of calamity."

The villagers reverently recite a typical Shinto prayer.
"Please, accept this offering."
And then, the sacrifice was lowered from the palanquin.

The sacrifice was clearly not human. It was a stone monument. One that should be called a memorial stone.
One of the men who had carried the palanquin took out a stone hammer and struck the monument. Naturally, cracks formed. Immediately, a black mist leaked out, taking a human shape before their eyes.
...Ugh, what... what is this...?
He glances around with a confused mind. The seal of sacred ropes and talismans remains strong even though the monument was broken; only his eyes and mouth are free to move.
"Then, we shall take our leave from your presence."
With that final word from the village head, the humans withdraw.
