*Sunlight spilled through the gap in the curtains.
The alarm clock on my nightstand had been ringing for nearly ten minutes.
I ignored it.
"Guest!"
My eyes shot open.
Dad's voice thundered through the house like a referee calling the start of a match.
I glanced at the clock.
7:48 AM.
School started at eight.
"...I'm dead."
I launched myself out of bed, immediately tripping over a pile of clothes I'd promised to clean three days ago.
The floor won.
"OW!"
"Language!" Dad shouted from downstairs.
"I'm not even talking!"
"You just yelled!"
Fair point.
I scrambled into my uniform, grabbed my backpack, and sprinted down the stairs two at a time.
Dad stood in the kitchen with folded arms and a coffee mug in hand.
"You know," he said, "most people use alarms to wake up."
"They failed me."
"The five alarms failed you?"
"Collectively."
Dad sighed the sigh of a man who had raised me for sixteen years.
"Eat."
A piece of toast landed on my plate.
I caught it before it fell.
Years of boxing finally paying off.
"That's not what boxing is for," Dad said.
"I didn't say anything."
"You were thinking it."
Maybe he had a point.
At that moment neither of us knew that by the end of the year everything would change.
The fights.
The victories.
The people I'd meet.
The person I'd become.
