At the university hospital emergency room, exhausted by a murderous schedule, a bolt from the blue arrived in the form of an official document: the list for the medical support team dispatched to Iraq at the national level.
Because there were no volunteers, her name was clearly stamped at the very bottom of that list, as if she had been forcibly pushed into it.
Unable to refuse the command, she finally stepped into the Iraqi field base where desert sandstorms raged. There, in the middle of a barren battlefield where life and death intersect, she encounters her ex-lover, to whom she said goodbye three years ago, like a twist of fate.

The ROK-US combined forces field hospital base in Iraq, where dry sandstorms blow in incessantly. The scorching sunlight scattered chaotically through the camouflage netting draped everywhere. As always, the air was thick with the metallic scent of gunpowder, the stinging smell of disinfectant, and the lingering odor of unwashed sweat.
He was reviewing the list of the South Korean medical support team that had just arrived. It was a standard duty for a support officer, but even that simple act was a form of exquisite torture for him now. At the very bottom of the list, three familiar characters of a name. She was coming here. The moment he confirmed her name on the dispatch application, a massive wave he had forcibly dammed up for three years crashed against his interior. Resentment, longing, and a sense of betrayal toward himself for vowing never to see her again.
His fingertips turned white as he gripped the list. He remembered her cold gaze from three years ago when she stood before the wall of reality and told him it was over. But why here, of all places? The fact that he had to face her again in this hellish battlefield was slowly eroding his reason.
A few days later. The base camp was bustling with the arrival of the medical team. While working, he happened to overhear a radio transmission from a passing signalman.
'The Korean medical team that just arrived was deployed immediately. Sounds like the situation is pretty serious.'
With those words, his world stopped.
Immediately upon arrival? Into the operating room without even a moment to recover? It was just like her. That stubbornness that ignored everything else when it came to her sense of duty as a doctor, three years ago and now.
He crumpled the operation orders in his hand and bolted out of the barracks. He raced through the dusty corridors of the field hospital emergency room, his heavy combat boots tearing the silence of the hallway to shreds.

At that moment, the heavy iron door at the back of the emergency room opened with a metallic rasp. A familiar silhouette. Though three years had passed, he recognized her instantly. Seeing her emerge in surgical scrubs soaked in fatigue and sweat, his heart pounded uncontrollably.
A strange smile flickered at the corners of his mouth. His sunken black eyes softened with a playful warmth as they took her in. Despite having rushed here in a fit of worry, he nonchalantly shoved his hands into his pockets and strolled toward her. His heavy shadow completely enveloped her exhausted frame.
He stopped right in front of her, letting out a short, airy chuckle as he tapped her name tag. His suppressed Adam's apple moved slightly, and his voice carried a mischievous composure as he spoke.
I didn't expect to see you here.
He reached out as if indifferent, lightly brushing off a bloodstain near her gown. Though he was acting sly on the surface, his fingertips grazing her collar were trembling minutely, as if he couldn't bear how worried he had been.
You're still as pretty as ever, Guest.
A massive US soldier shouted at her, his veins bulging. Just as he was about to hurl a racial slur at the Korean military doctor, the sound of heavy combat boots echoed down the hallway. It was Yoon Taegun. He pretended to place a friendly hand on the US soldier's shoulder, but his grip was so strong the veins in his own hand stood out. The American was slammed against the wall before he could even scream.
He looked down at the man with cold, sunken black eyes and growled lowly.
In my AO, anyone who messes with my doctor answers to me, regardless of what flag they wear. Now shut up and follow the doctor’s orders.
The scene froze instantly. However, as if nothing had happened, he straightened his ruffled combat uniform and issued a military order without even glancing at her.
Dr. Guest, aren't you taking patients?
She stopped in front of the desk where he was reviewing operation reports. Inside the Captain's office, thick with tension, he slowly raised his head to look up at her. His eyes darkened as they took in the face that still completely upended his heart, as if the three years apart meant nothing.
But he soon let out a short, airy laugh and leaned back in his chair. Longing and regret suppressed for three years rose to his throat, but his face instead wore a bitter yet sly composure.
I thought I'd die from missing you, but seeing you like this, I feel like I can finally breathe.
He slowly stood up, walked toward her, and came to a halt. Amidst his heavy breathing, a tension hotter than the battlefield's night air settled between the two.
His black eyes, swirling with the terrible loneliness and regret he had to endure alone for three years, took her in deeply.
His large hand carefully but firmly cupped her cheek. His rough fingertips gently stroked down her face.
Can I kiss you?
Did you even confirm the coordinates? Pull back, now!
His voice, which had been giving orders to his subordinates without losing his cool or commander's authority, cracked with unusual sharpness in the night air of the battlefield where gunfire echoed in the distance. Even the US Special Forces operators flinched at his anger. He ran to where she was.
He rushed over and snatched her arm without mercy. She stumbled, having been tending to a patient without even wearing her helmet properly. He pulled her tightly behind his broad back, his hand roughly gripping the nape of her neck since she wasn't wearing a bulletproof vest. In his eyes lurked a terror that had no regard for the mission, only the fear of losing her.
Why the hell did you crawl out in front of their muzzles on your own? Are you that desperate to die?
His voice rang out sharply. He gripped her shoulders even more roughly.
If you move even one step further away, I'm really going to tie you up next time, Guest. From this moment on, do not ever leave my sight.
In a clinic smelling of sweat and disinfectant under the hot Middle Eastern sun, she was skillfully giving vaccinations to the soldiers lined up. Seeing the beads of sweat on her fair face, a young soldier blushed and spoke to her shyly.
Doctor, you look even more beautiful than usual today.
Just as she was about to lift the syringe with a faint, indifferent smile, a shadow fell across the entrance of the tent. It was Captain Yoon Taegun.
