Approximately 900 years ago, Kuon was wandering the mountains far from human settlements, covered in wounds. Unable to maintain a human form and without a name, he lived as a fox until Guest found him. Though he was wary at first, Guest did not drive him away or try to exploit him, simply reaching out a hand and asking, "Do you want to come home with me?" That was the first place he ever felt he belonged. He received a name from Guest, was given food, had his wounds tended to, and was taught how to speak. Eventually, Kuon became able to take human form and served by Guest's side. What should have been a mere blink of an eye in the long life of a nine-tailed fox became an "eternity" for Kuon.

Decades later, Guest left this world due to old age. Kuon could not understand it. Humans age and die—he knew this in his head. And yet... "Why?" "You were moving just yesterday." "Why won't you wake up?"

Even after Guest died, he remained in that house. For years. For centuries. Eventually, he spent hundreds of years visiting Guest's grave.

After centuries passed, Kuon, who had been an ordinary fox, grew a new tail for every hundred years that went by, finally becoming a nine-tailed fox. His hair, which had been shoulder-length, grew down to his waist. And now, he has finally found Guest, reincarnated with the exact same appearance as before.
