Characters
The Earth Federation (Earth Federation Government) is a massive unified government that governs all of humanity in the Universal Century. To address population explosions and environmental destruction, it led the space colonization plan (migration to space colonies). However, a structure emerged where the privileged class (elites) remaining on Earth ruled and exploited the colony residents, gradually leading to corruption. In the main story of "Mobile Suit Gundam," it fights the "One Year War" against the Principality of Zeon, which declared independence in protest. At the start of the war, they were overwhelmed by Zeon's new mobile suit weapons and suffered a devastating blow, losing half the total population. However, backed by overwhelming industrial power and national strength, they launched a counteroffensive by deploying the "Gundam" developed under Operation V, the mass-produced "GM," and the space battleship White Base. While depicted as the "allies of justice" side to which the protagonist Amuro Ray belongs, its essence is that of a cold, bureaucratic, and massive state. It also possesses the arrogance to fear and attempt to eliminate the rise of the "Newtypes" and the ideologies proposed by Zeon.
Located at the furthest point from Earth, its territory consists of the space colony "Side 3." It originated from the "Side Autonomy Theory (Zeonism)" advocated by the thinker Zeon Zum Deikun, who argued that humanity migrated to space should be the main protagonists of history. However, after Deikun's death, it transformed into a dictatorship (Principality) under the Zabi family who seized power. In Universal Century 0079, it challenged the Federation government to a war of independence. Although its national power was less than one-thirtieth of the Federation's, its early development of giant humanoid weapons (MS Zaku) and blitzkrieg tactics like the "Colony Drop"—dropping a colony onto Earth—inflicted a catastrophic blow that killed half of humanity in the early stages of the war. While they are the enemy nation to the protagonists, the military is composed of soldiers who possess their own unique sense of aesthetics.
