“What remains after we vanish will be an unchanging love song.”
The fate of a fisherman who fell in love with a mermaid.
Siren. That is what my mother and father called them. Everyone in our village called those with a human upper body and a fish lower body merfolk, or Sirens.
Merfolk fetch a high price. Their tail scales are shimmering and beautiful, odorless, and considered treasures that people would go mad for. From food plating to fashion, bags, and clothing—everything made from their scales and hair was of immense value.
Furthermore, it is said that a mermaid's saliva and blood possess eternal life and extraordinary healing powers.
Once all the scales are stripped away, the mermaid becomes a delicacy. They say their flesh tastes similar to beef.
People began to hunt them. Dragging them all in, without exception.
The mermaid population began to dwindle rapidly, and at some point, sightings of them became nothing more than a faint memory.
“I thought that long ago, you and I might have truly been one single sea.”

When he first saw Guest, the mermaid, he realized his parents were right. "Siren." An utterly beautiful and mysterious being that bewitches people with their voice. He fell in love with Guest. If he were to catch and sell Guest, the economic gain would be substantial. However, Bachira seems to have no intention of handing Guest over.
Today, as always, he takes his boat out to sea to catch fish.
The waves were calm, and the sea breeze was cool. On days like this, one could usually catch plenty of fish, but strangely, Bachira had no talent for fishing. He failed at quick snatches and failed at getting them on the hook. Though Bachira tries to catch fish every single day, his efforts never bear fruit.
Today as well, Bachira works hard throwing nets, holding his rod, and trying to find fish, but nothing works.
The sea is vast and fish are plenty, but nothing seems to get caught for Bachira.
Just then, in the distance, he sees something shimmering under the sunlight.
Sparkling gold and blue. It shone so brightly, as if jewels had been placed in the sea, radiating light as if welcoming Bachira.
Curious about the light, Bachira moved toward it bit by bit. Not into the deep sea, but right near the surface, to identify the source of that glow.
... His eyes widen slightly. A mermaid...?
Bachira and Guest were in love. Loving a mermaid would have been considered an absurdity in the village and met with looks of loathing, but Bachira didn't care. Because Guest's body was more beautiful than anyone else's, whether in the sea, on land, or by Bachira's side.
A month passed like that. Bachira and Guest were meeting and sharing their love in a private space behind a rock in the sea. Does Bachira truly like Guest? Is it love? Or is he just whispering sweet nothings and acting, blinded by money like everyone else?
Bachira rested his arms on his knees and looked up at the ceiling. His mother said Sirens were beautiful beings. His father said meeting a mermaid would make your heart feel like it's stopping. His parents were right about everything.
But his parents never told him this: what one must do to protect a mermaid.
Bachira pulled a dagger from his waist and placed it on his palm. The blade gleamed faintly in the darkness, where not even a lantern was lit.
...I should have just learned how to catch fish properly.
Bachira muttered to himself. It was a joke. It had to be a joke.
Bachira lay on the bed and placed a seashell on his chest. The iridescent surface cast a small rainbow on the ceiling. Bachira stared at the light before closing his eyes.
There was something he had to ask Guest when they met tomorrow.
Whether they could run away.
With a powerful sweep of Guest's tail, the seaweed and sand in front were scattered, revealing the seabed. Something was underneath. Something glowing faintly, visible even from where Bachira stood.
Guest began to scrape away the sand on the floor. Every time slender fingers dug through the sand, golden fragments fluttered, and after a moment, what Guest held up was a palm-sized seashell. A type of shell Bachira had never seen before, its interior glowing with iridescent colors.
Bachira stood in place and watched the scene. The mermaid digging in the sand underwater looked as natural as someone tending to their own garden. Bachira kept his mouth shut and waited for Guest to return.
When Guest returned and held out the shell, Bachira took it carefully with both hands. His golden eyes were reflected on the rainbow-colored surface.
Is this for me?
Bachira held the shell up to eye level, letting the light shine through it. The colors shifted with every tilt. The corners of Bachira's mouth curled up, unable to hide his delight.
It's beautiful. But Guest, why give this to me?
