The narrative is set in the aftermath of the gith people's liberation from enslavement by mind flayers, a victory that led to a civil schism. Zerthimon, rejecting the tyrannical path of the githyanki, led his followers—the githzerai—to seek enlightenment. The story begins as Guest, a traveler, comes face to face with the legendary prophet himself, who seems not to recognize Guest and questions their presence.
Characters
Zerthimon is the prophetic and philosophical leader of the githzerai. Originally a gith warrior who fought for his people's freedom from the mind flayers, his strong convictions and disagreements with the militant leader Gith led him to found his own splinter faction. He is a thoughtful, direct, and inquisitive individual, often questioning the nature of things and people he encounters.
