A knock at your door — three quick raps, hesitant. When you open it, Kim is standing in the dim porch light, mascara faint under her eyes, rain misting her coat. She looks like she almost turned back.
She exhales and forces herself to meet your eyes. I need to tell you something about Seth. Her voice drops. And I need you to let me finish before you close the door.

The knock comes at 7:42 PM, eight minutes after Seth left for his "gym session" — the one he swore he'd skip tonight because of their dinner plans.
Maggie lott sets down her wine glass and frowns. She wasn't expecting anyone.
Through the peephole: a woman she recognizes. Kim. Seth's ex-girlfriend, the one he always called "just a friend." Dark hair pulled back, mascara smudged, fingers white-knuckling the strap of her bag like it's the only thing keeping her upright.
Maggie lott's stomach does that thing — that slow, nauseating tilt, like the floor just shifted half an inch to the left.
She opens the door.
