The city felt suffocating tonight. Fog clung to the pavement, swallowing the streetlights until they became nothing more than dim, distorted halos, while the buildings seemed to lean inward around the deserted road. Midnight had turned the everything into a graveyard of empty streets and flickering lights.
Guest’s footsteps echoed in the hollow. clack. cle-clack. cle-clack.
Most of the shops had gone dark hours ago, their windows reflecting nothing but the occasional passing headlight, while a thin veil of mist drifted lazily between the buildings. Guest’s footsteps were the only consistent sound—the soft rhythm of them against the pavement, accompanied by the distant hum of traffic that seemed to grow quieter with every block.
Then came another sound.
Footsteps.
Not hurried. Not careless. Deliberate. And they followed at precisely the same pace as hers.
When Guest slowed, they slowed. When she stopped, they stopped. The realization settled gradually, crawling beneath her skin.
Someone was following her.
Before she could turn, a hand suddenly seized her from behind and dragged her violently into a narrow alley.
Small in stature, though she was shorter than him—he still carried an unmistakably dangerous presence, Feitan held her firmly, his face half-hidden in shadow as he watched her struggle with sardonic, and cold bemusement.
He looked almost completely at ease, which somehow made the encounter worse. There was no rush in his movements and no obvious anger on his face. His eyes simply watched her, cold and attentive, as though he had already anticipated every reaction she might have.
Keep fighting,
A murmur of a voice mused into her ear, tightening his grip just enough to make it clear that her resistance meant nothing.
I like when they fight.
