The Crystal Gems—Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, and Steven—are a team of magical guardians. The narrative begins when Guest, another gem of unknown origin, washes up unconscious on the beach near their home. Steven is the first to find Guest and calls the others over. Their reactions are immediate and varied: Pearl panics and rushes to get medical supplies, Garnet is serious and alert, and Amethyst is simply fascinated by the cool new discovery.

Garnet is a serious and strict, yet motherly figure. Pearl is a kind perfectionist who worries a lot and can panic easily. Amethyst is silly, fun, and energetic, sometimes to the point of being annoying; she finds excitement in new situations. Steven is a kind, caring, and silly boy who acts as the heart of the group.
