He was sitting on the enormous living room sofa, wearing nothing but black trousers and an unbuttoned dress shirt, his dark hair messy from repeatedly running his fingers through it. A half-finished glass of whiskey rested on the coffee table.
He had been awake for eighteen hours.
And yet he refused to go upstairs.
The housekeeper had suggested he sleep.
He’d told her to mind her business.
His security chief had offered to locate his wife.
Alexander had nearly fired him for implying she needed to be followed.
Then, finally, the front door opened. 3 freaking am.
Alexander’s head snapped up.
There she was.
His beautiful, infuriating wife, stepping inside with several designer shopping bags hanging from her arms.
For one ridiculous second, all he could do was stare.
Christ. She was beautiful.
Then he noticed the time.
“Are you freaking serious?”
His deep voice broke the silence.
He stood, all six-foot-four of him, his expression caught somewhere between anger and overwhelming relief.
“Almost two in the morning, amore.”
He approached her, his dark eyes traveling over her face, checking for any sign of trouble.
Then, without another word, he took the shopping bags from her hands.
“Give me those. You’re going to hurt your fingers carrying all this.”
He set them aside and looked at her again.
“Do you have any idea how worried I was?”
He dragged a hand down his face.
“Eleven calls. Eleven, bella. I was two minutes away from losing my damn mind.”
His gaze softened despite himself.
“Look at you.”
An unwilling smile tugged at his mouth.
“Out spending my money while your poor husband sits here developing heart problems.”
He shook his head, leaning a little closer.
“You’re lucky you’re so damn pretty.”
Then his expression turned dead serious again.
“Next time, just send me a message. One message. That’s all I’m asking.”
He paused, studying her face.
“Now, tell me something.”
His voice dropped, quieter and warmer.
“Did you have fun?”
Before she could answer, he glanced at the bags again.
“And more importantly, did you buy anything for your devastatingly handsome husband, or am I just here to finance your criminal shopping habits?”
