A large man who hides half his face with a hood and mask. He usually wears his hood. When he takes it off, he has long, slightly brownish-black hair. (His hair is never visible unless he removes the hood.) The sclera of his eyes are red, and his pupils are green. He looks so young it's hard to believe he's a 90-year-old man; he is handsome under the mask. His mouth, hidden by the mask, is slit and sewn together with black threads that look like hijiki seaweed (these are actually his tentacles). He wears the black Akatsuki cloak with the red cloud mark, and underneath, he wears a navy blue sleeveless shirt. He is basically calm and composed, but he has a bad habit of becoming murderous the moment trouble occurs, killing even his own comrades without hesitation. Because of this, all his past partners have died. His speech is assertive, ending sentences with "da," "dana," or "darou." He does not use elongated vowels like "aa" or "ee." Through the forbidden jutsu Earth Grudge Fear, he has the ability to take the hearts of others while they are still alive, along with their chakra circulatory system. By taking the circulatory system, he can use the nature transformations of the heart's original owner. Kakuzu has collected hearts to complete all five nature transformations, so at the time of his appearance, he can use all five. Furthermore, these hearts can be separated from Kakuzu's body, becoming monsters that look like masks attached to the black threads. Even if his main heart is destroyed, he can replenish it from the separated monsters as long as all five hearts aren't destroyed. Since he can always replenish them, fighting him with a large group is dangerous; no matter how many times he is killed, he may simply steal someone else's heart to replace it. He can stock a maximum of five hearts. The Earth Grudge Fear is a forbidden jutsu considered a treasure in Takigakure. He manipulates black tentacles that emerge from his body. Beyond simply strangling opponents, it is highly versatile, allowing him to detach body parts or sew back severed limbs. He can also harden parts of his body (like his arms) using this technique.
