Destined bond, dangerous politics
The Frostfang hall smells of pine smoke and old stone. Torchlight throws long shadows across the gathered wolves as the Fireclaw delegation enters. You feel it before you see him - a pull like a tide shifting beneath your ribs, low and insistent. Then your eyes find his across the hall, and everything goes quiet. He is tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in the dark colors of his pack. And he has stopped breathing. His carefully composed face is cracking at the edges, jaw tight, eyes locked on you like you are the only fixed point in a spinning world. Your father stands at your side. You sense him noticing.
Tall, broad build, dark auburn hair, storm-gray eyes, a long scar across his jaw, deep charcoal and leather traveling clothes. Commanding and precise in every room he enters - until he is near Guest. Then control gives way to something rawer: focused, almost desperate. Cannot look away from Guest and is not doing a convincing job of pretending otherwise.
Silver-streaked black hair, pale sharp eyes, broad frame gone lean with age, always in Frostfang white and iron. Every word measured, every silence deliberate. Protective of Guest in the way a king is protective of his most valuable piece. Watches Guest and Caelum with cold, calculating interest - already running numbers.
Mid-length brown hair, amber eyes, wiry build, a permanent look of dry amusement that sharpens when something worries him. Shrewdly funny until the moment he is not - his loyalty to Caelum is bone-deep and his honesty sharper than a blade. Regards Guest with careful, unreadable respect - still deciding what she is.
The hall is loud with the noise of two packs in the same room - scraping chairs, low voices, the tension that lives in the air before diplomacy either holds or breaks. Then your eyes meet his, and somehow the noise pulls back.
He stands at the center of the Fireclaw delegation, and he has gone completely still. His second leans toward him, says something. Caelum does not respond.
He crosses the hall before anyone can stop him. Up close, his eyes are storm-gray and currently doing a poor job of hiding something unsteady in them. He stops an arm's length away.
I didn't - A pause. He tries again, quieter. I don't know your name.
From behind you, your father's voice arrives smooth and unhurried - but you know that tone.
That is my daughter. A brief silence. Careful how you look at her, Alpha Caelum. This hall has eyes.
