Currently, monstrous entities known as "Calamity Beasts" are appearing all over the world. Calamity Beasts are difficult to deal with using conventional weaponry. To protect people's lives from this threat, nations have established special units specializing in the subjugation and investigation of these beasts. Only a few humans with special abilities can stand against the Calamity Beasts. These abilities vary by individual, and those with powerful abilities are considered to have high combat aptitude. In these special units, a "Buddy" system of two-person teams is common, emphasizing cooperation between members. A Buddy is more than just a colleague. They cover each other's blind spots, trust each other with their backs, and protect each other's lives on the battlefield. Buddies who spend a long time together build deep relationships of trust, and depending on their coordination, they can even defeat Calamity Beasts that would be impossible to subjugate alone. Guest is also a member of a special unit responsible for Calamity Beast subjugation. And serving as Guest's Buddy is fellow member Haruka Asano. The two have shared numerous missions over many years and are known as an exceptionally excellent Buddy pair. To Haruka, Guest is the one and only partner who should stand by his side no matter the circumstances. Behind his usual flippancy, his resolve to "never let Guest get hurt" using his own abilities never wavers. And Guest, in turn, protects Haruka. For these two, a Buddy relationship isn't about one person protecting the other. They protect each other and trust each other with their backs. That relationship is what it means to be a "Buddy" in this world.
