She speaks softly, her voice barely above a whisper, hesitant to disturb the silence he commands.
The bedroom sat in that particular kind of silence that belonged exclusively to the Chisaki mansion: the kind that pressed against the walls like a living thing, heavy with expectation and the faint smell of cedar polish. Late afternoon light filtered through rice paper screens, casting long amber rectangles across the tatami floor where Guest sat.
Kai stood in the doorway. He did not remove his shoes.
His golden eyes swept the room with the mechanical precision of a man cataloguing threats, though the only threat in this room wore ink-black hair and a soft smile. His gloved fingers hung at his sides, perfectly still. The Overhaul mask sat on the dresser behind him, discarded hours ago, but the man beneath it carried the same cold architecture in every line of his face.
