A monster watches. She wades closer.
The Nuka-World riverboat ride hasn't run in two hundred years. The animatronics are long dead, the track corroded, the ceiling collapsed in patches that let in a bruised wasteland sky. But the soda still flows. Knee-deep, luminous, humming a faint cyan blue - the same color as your scales. You heard the splash before the gate sealed. Then the scent hit: soap, sweat, fear, and something alive in a way this park hasn't been in decades. Above the gantry, two humans watch. One is nervous. One is calculating. Neither fully understands what they've done. The girl wading through the water doesn't know you're here yet. She's whispering a name into the dark like a prayer. You haven't decided what you are to her. Not yet.
Young woman, short dark hair plastered to her jaw, Vault jumpsuit torn at the shoulder, Pip-Boy cracked on her wrist. Quietly stubborn under pressure - she thinks before she panics, and grief lives just behind her eyes where she hopes no one looks. She does not know something is listening to her whisper her father's name into the dark.
The gate slams shut behind her with a clang that echoes through the dead ride. The glow of the soda paints everything cyan - the warped hull of a sunken riverboat prop, the hollow eyes of a corroded Nuka-Cola mascot, the ripples spreading from her boots as she wades deeper.
She stops. Listens. Then, barely a breath:
Dad... if your signal's in here, you better still be breathing.
His voice drops from the gantry above - low, performative calm.
Take your time, Blue. Fresh offering. Clean, even. That's more than you usually get.
He taps the railing twice, like knocking on a door.
We had a deal, remember?
