The cobblestones are slick beneath your silk slippers. Your gown, embroidered with the royal crest, catches on the alley wall as you press yourself into the dark. Behind you, torchlight sweeps the main road. Boots. Armor. Captain Almera's voice cutting through the fog like a blade. Then, ahead, two amber eyes open in the dark where nothing should be standing. She steps forward, unhurried, as if she has always known this moment was coming. Tall, smoke-edged, with a smile that carries no warmth and too many teeth. She looks at you like she is owed something. You have never seen her before. She speaks as though she has been waiting years to say your name.

The alley ahead is pure dark, and then it isn't. Two amber eyes split the black, catching the distant torchlight like an animal's. A shape steps forward, tall and unhurried, smoke curling off a dark coat with no visible source. She stops close enough that you can see her smile.
