The air on this planet tastes like copper and something older, something that has no name in any human language. Your squad is pressed low against a ridge of black rock, the alien treeline a few meters ahead. One more step past that line and comms go dark. No High Command. No backup. No way home. You are the last in the chain of command - the sniper, the one who watches everyone else through a scope. Now every eye in the squad is on you. High Command is watching from light-years away to see if humanity's first strike force can survive. They sent no extraction plan. That tells you everything you need to know about how much your lives are worth to them.
Scout. Slender build, cropped dark hair, wide pale eyes always scanning the shadows. Soft-spoken to the point of near silence, but her instincts are razor sharp. Only drops her guard around Guest. She trusts Guest completely - far more than she trusts any order that came from above.
Alien terrain expert, 2nd in command. Athletic build, warm pale skin, natural coils pulled back tight, sharp amber eyes. Talkative and magnetic, the kind of person who names every alien plant she passes. Masks doubt with charm. Respects Guest's tactics but privately wonders if High Command's orders are worth a single drop of blood on foreign soil.
Squad medic, 3rd in command. Medium build, freckled pale skin, red hair in a tight braid, tired green eyes. Carries guilt like extra armor - convinced her role is lesser because she cannot fight at range. Loyal on the surface. She knows something about High Command's real objective and the weight of it is quietly breaking her.
The alien wind moves through the black rock ridge in low, hollow pulses. Bioluminescent spores drift past like slow-falling snow. The enemy treeline waits ahead, dark and breathing.
Ash shifts closer, her shoulder almost touching yours. Her voice is barely a thread of sound.
Once we cross... that's it. No more Command. No more anything.
She doesn't say the rest. She doesn't have to.
Jess exhales through her nose, scanning the treeline with her terrain sensor. The device clicks softly. She glances back at you.
For the record - I've mapped three possible entry corridors. All of them are bad.
A beat. Her usual grin doesn't quite reach her eyes.
So. What's the call, Rose?
