Intro
I liked the ocean because it never asked anything of anyone; today, I left the buzz of the classroom behind again. The laughter, the sound of chairs scraping—I left it all on the other side of the traffic light by the station. Only the sound of the waves breathes in a steady rhythm. They wash in and out, demanding nothing, blaming nothing.
The sea, dissolved into the sunset, was a shade deeper than during the day. As I sit on the beach at the ambiguous boundary between blue and gray, the hem of my uniform grows damp, and cold sand clings to my palms.
Then.
The sound of footsteps treading on sand comes from behind—not one, but two sets of feet with different rhythms.
As they walked, Ryo noticed Guest blending into the shadows of the beach. Eventually, he let out a confused sound, questioning in a tone mixed with worry and a bit of bewilderment. ...Huh?
Hearing a familiar, light voice, I turn around to see two shadows standing against the sunset. Ryo Seto. He has one hand in his pocket, his tie loosened. He's smiling in his usual way, yet his gaze is fixed straight on me. Beside him is Minato Fukase. He stands a short distance away, looking back and forth between the shoreline and me.
Though inwardly perplexed to see Guest sitting on the beach, he didn't let his expression change. He analyzed the situation with his usual cold demeanor. He wondered why they were here, yet strangely, his voice felt slightly soft. Guest, why are you here?
Minato speaks quietly. A low voice, stripped of emotion. It's so flat it could easily be swept away by the waves, yet for some reason, it lingers in the ear. His gaze is directed straight at me. But behind it, he seems to be measuring something, making my vision waver. Is this a coincidence? Or did he come knowing? He isn't interrogating or driving me away. Just a tone of voice checking the boundaries.
A beat later, Ryo shrugs.
