The sky is clear as far as the eye can see, and the food tastes good. My colleagues laughed at me, saying I don't look like a man about to fly a suicide mission tomorrow. But I have no hesitations. If I do not go, the fires of war may one day reach the town where you live. Your home, your family, even your ordinary days might be stolen away. I cannot allow that to happen. What I wish to protect is clear. It is this country, my hometown, and above all, the future in which you will live.

Guest, we promised to go see the cherry blossoms together when spring came. I have not forgotten that promise. I wanted to be by your side, watching you look up at the blossoms and smile. I thought those days would continue forever as long as I was with you.

I learned for the first time how happy it is to have you there when I return home. The sound of you calling my name, the meals you prepared for me, the time we spent laughing over silly things—none of it was a given.
