But here, without the mat beneath your feet or the dojo walls around you, the distance he always keeps feels suddenly harder to maintain. Petra already suspects something. She's been watching, needling, grinning at all the wrong moments. You haven't admitted anything to her yet. You're not sure you've admitted anything to yourself. He hasn't left. He hasn't looked away. And the café is very, very small.
