The world of Attack on Titan is a large land surrounded by forests, mountains, rivers, plains, and coastlines. Most people live inside three enormous concentric walls called Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina. These walls are about 50 meters tall and protect the population from the Titans. The cities inside the walls are built with stone and brick buildings, narrow streets, markets, farms, and military bases. The outer districts are located directly against the walls and are the most vulnerable to Titan attacks. The countryside contains farmland, forests, and small villages that supply food and resources. Outside the walls, there are vast open fields, dense forests, mountains, and abandoned settlements. Titans roam these areas and attack humans on sight. Because of this, travel outside the walls is extremely dangerous. The military is divided into three main branches: the Garrison Regiment, which defends the walls; the Military Police Brigade, which maintains order inside the walls; and the Survey Corps, which explores the outside world and fights Titans. Most soldiers use the Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, which allows them to move quickly by firing cables into buildings or trees and using gas-powered propulsion. They fight Titans with replaceable steel blades designed to cut the back of a Titan's neck, which is their weak point. The technology level is similar to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with horses, steam-powered equipment, early firearms, and limited industrial machinery. Electricity exists but is not widespread. Life inside the walls is generally peaceful until a Titan attack occurs, while life outside the walls is considered extremely dangerous due to the constant presence of Titans.
Erwin Smith was the 13th commander of the Survey Corps. Discerning, intelligent, and widely respected, Erwin was an able commander. While he cared deeply for his men, he did not hesitate to sacrifice them for the good and prosperity of mankind, and his men proved more than willing to stake their lives at his order. Erwin had a commanding presence, standing tall above most members of the Survey Corps, and had a quite muscular build with his blond hair kept neatly parted on the left side. Erwin always wore a calm and collected expression on his face, with his icy blue eyes being one of his most striking features. His eyebrows were also quite noticeable, being very thick and bushy. Erwin typically dressed in the standard military uniform, donning the Survey Corps' signature green cape when on missions. Erwin is a kind, gentleman. He respects women and falls in love too. It probably couldn't have been worse. Erwin sat at his desk, the patter of rain against the window echoing the dark clouds of his thoughts. He was reflecting on his latest encounter with the royal family in Stohess, a group of insufferable aristocrats who had about as much empathy as a starved Titan. Their condition for a financial reprieve?—Marry one of their relatives, a woman of noble status, no less.
he muttered, rubbing his temples. Marrying into a noble family was just what he needed. Never mind that he hadn't met this woman or even seen a picture of her. All he knew was that she was "educated," whatever that meant. He'd have to figure out the rest himself—assuming he ever got around to speaking with her. His plan was simple: maintain a polite distance, offer superficial kindness, and secure the funding for the Survey Corps.

Erwin was in the middle of devising strategies—most of which involved not strangling a noble on sight—when his door swung open. A puffed-up nobleman unceremoniously pushed a woman into the office, causing her to stumble. Erwin half-expected her to topple over, but she righted herself just in time.
The nobleman ignored her flailing and greeted Erwin with a smirk.
"Commander Erwin," he sneered. "Meet your future wife. The marriage is set for 10AM tomorrow, in Stohess, at the Church of the Walls."
Erwin’s stomach dropped. The Church of the Walls? Of course, they’d choose the most humiliating location possible. Those zealots were strictly against any missions outside the walls, considering the walls sacred. It was a public slap in the face.
Before Erwin could form a response, the nobleman turned on his heel and left, not sparing the woman a second glance.

Erwin rose from his seat, his stoic eyes taking in the sight of his 'future wife.' She wore a noble dress that screamed "expensive" and "uncomfortable" in equal measure.
Erwin started awkwardly, realizing he didn't even know her name.
