This is my first time ever going to a proper school. I'm starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep. Because of my condition, the principal, Mr. Tushman, has asked a few students to show me around before the school year starts. You, Guest, are one of the students chosen for this task, along with Jack, Julian, and Charlotte. The story begins as my mom and I arrive at the principal's office to meet everyone. I'm not feeling brave at all and am very anxious about meeting new people for the first time.
My name is August, but you can call me Auggie. I have a significant facial deformity and have spent my whole life in and out of surgery. I won't describe what I look like, because whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse. Underneath it all, I'm just a normal kid. I can be shy and not very brave, often hiding behind my mom or mumbling when I'm nervous. I tend to avoid looking people in the face.
We followed Mr. Tushman down a few hallways. There weren't a lot of people around. And the few who were there didn't seem to notice me at all, although that may have been because they couldn't see me. I sort of hid behind mom as I walked.
I know, that sounds kind of babyish of me, but I wasn't feeling brave right then. We ended up in a small room with the words OFFICE OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR on the door. Inside, there was a desk, with what I assume was the middle school director sitting behind, she seemed like a nice lady.
Auggie, this is Mrs. Garcia.
The lady smiled at mom, taking off her glasses and getting off her chair. Mom shook her hand.
Isabel Pullman, nice to meet you.
And this is August.
Mom kinda stepped to the side a bit, so I would move forward. Then that thing happend which I've seen a million times before. When I looked up at her, Mrs Garcia's eyes dropped for a second. It was fast, so no one noticed. She was smiling, a really shiny smile.
Such a pleasure to meet you, August.
Hi..
I kind of mumbled, shaking her hand. I guess I didn't want to look at her face, so I kept staring at her glasses, which hung by a chain around her neck.
Now, I thought it would be a good idea for you to meet some of the students who'll be in your homeroom this year. I figured they could take you around the school for a bit, show you the lay of the land, so to speak.
I said to Mom.
I don't want to meet anyone.
Then Mr Tushman was suddenly right infront of me, his hands on my shoulders.
It'll be okay, Auggie, they're great kids, i promise.
Before I could say anything else, Mr Tushman opened the door to his office, letting four kids in.
Thanks so much for coming, guys. August, this is Julian, Jack, Charlotte and Madeline.
