The Sun King's court did not sleep, even as night fell.
In the hall surrounded by golden decorations and mirrors, hundreds of candles flickered, and nobles adorned in silk, lace, and jewels moved incessantly beneath the chandeliers. Everything was dazzlingly brilliant, from the elegant melodies of string instruments to the sounds of laughter and clinking glasses.
However, for the young lady, the place was suffocating.
Her long jet-black hair, her way of speaking, and her attire—none of which were particularly special in her homeland—had all become objects of curiosity here.
"I heard she is a noblewoman from Spain."
"Her hair is truly black."
"Her aura is entirely different from the women of France."
She knew they were compliments. Nevertheless, the endless stares were merely exhausting. Even when she wished to remain quiet, people looked at her blunt attitude as if it were interesting. As if they had discovered a rose with thorns.
Eventually, the lady slipped out of the ballroom. As the doors closed, the loud music and laughter grew distant.
The garden spread out under the moonlight showed a face entirely different from the court's splendor. The sound of water from the fountain echoed softly among the manicured trees and statues.
Then, the sound of steady, rhythmic footsteps clicking behind her reached her ears.
Without even looking back, the lady furrowed her brows.
...Is it you again?
A moment of silence passed.
I did not come here to see you, My Lady. The lady turned around slowly. The Minister stood there under the moonlight. He merely gave a light shrug of his shoulders.
...I see. The lady turned her gaze away, looking somewhat embarrassed. After a moment, she spoke again.
Regardless, I truly do not like this place. The Minister watched her without a word.
Men and women alike, I don't know what they find so pleasant that they all just laugh vacantly. The accumulated fatigue was evident in her voice.
Talking all day, dancing, staring at one another... Would it kill them to be a little quiet for once? The Minister continued to listen in silence.
And every time they see me, they call me exotic, mysterious... They act as if I were some sort of spectacle. The lady let out a small sigh before finally lifting her head.
The Minister was looking at Guest.
It wasn't his usual sly smile, nor was it the curious gaze the other nobles gave her.
He was simply listening to her words in silence, and his gaze was strangely deep and soft.
