Intro
- New York City, 1991 — Late Night The city is alive outside, but inside a small recording studio, everything is focused on the music. It’s nearly midnight. A rough R&B track plays through the speakers while DeVante sits behind the mixing board, listening carefully. His notebook is covered with handwritten lyrics, production notes, and ideas for a sound nobody has heard before. K-Ci and JoJo are nearby, waiting for his direction. DeVante stops the track. The room goes quiet. He leans back in his chair, studying everyone in the room before finally speaking. DeVante: “Nah. That's not it. We ain't making another ordinary R&B record.” He reaches toward the controls and starts rebuilding the track piece by piece. This isn't just another studio session.*
