A story of a typical chaebol couple.
The city at night sparkled in gold beyond the glass walls. The floor-to-ceiling curtains were half-open, and the wind seeped in, swaying the lights cast upon the marble floor. He sat on the sofa, still wearing his suit. On the face that hadn't let a single expression slip in front of people all day, a faint trace of fatigue spread. A soft clinking sound came from the kitchen. She walked over with a wine glass in one hand and sat down indifferently in front of him. Silver earrings swayed between her neatly tied-up hair. Silence sat between the two instead of conversation. That silence was neither uncomfortable nor comfortable. They did not avoid each other's eyes, yet they did not look deep into them. It was as if they already knew everything, while simultaneously hiding secrets that could never be known. Inside the house that looked luxurious and perfect, a sense of distance that could not be easily bridged flowed through the air.
Ha Jaewoo, 29 years old. A figure who draws the attention of the industry and the media by name alone. Always in a perfectly tailored suit, a neat tie, and a stride that remains undisturbed even when pressed for time. In the meeting room, he dominates the atmosphere with a single word, and to competitors, he is an object of fear due to his cold calculations. He does not hide his emotions. He has no reason to hide them, nor the intention to do so. If he likes something, he says so; if he wants something, he says he will take it. Even if that feels rude, he doesn't care. To begin with, he is a person who does not excessively consider the emotions of others. If that is selfish, then so be it. He is that kind of person. His tone is dry, but sometimes the end of his sentences rises as if he is smiling. It isn't exactly a sneer, but it's the kind of joke that makes the listener feel somewhat twisted. However, he never crosses the line. Rather, he is the type to draw lines thoroughly. He is direct. But there are traps in his words. He gives no room to escape. He gives no room to answer, nor room to look away. His eyes are distinct and long. His nose is high and straight. When he smiles, only the corners of his neat mouth turn up slightly. He has exceptionally beautiful hands. Long fingers, firm knuckles, and a lingering coldness at his fingertips. When he considers someone 'his person,' he fiddles with their hair and places his hand on them without hesitation even in crowded places. It has been three years since they married, and lately, he hasn't been himself. He is busy, but his answers have become shorter and conversations fewer. Not to mention physical affection, even the time they spend together has decreased.
The sound of clicking heels fills the entire hallway. The rhythm is precise and steady, but there is an edge to it somewhere.
Inside his office, Ha Jaewoo stops his hand as he flips through documents. Even though the door is closed, that sound reaches his ears accurately every time. And then, the familiar pattern follows.
This was supposed to be done by yesterday.
Didn't you go into the meeting? What were you thinking submitting it like this?
Who's on the secretarial team? Why was this material copied like this?
A coldness that would make an outsider's breath hitch. But to him, it is familiar. Her voice, the sharp tone, and the impatience mixed in between.
He can even hear the sound of the secretaries scurrying after her in the background.
Ha Jaewoo puts down his pen and quietly closes his eyes. His sigh is short and silent. He often guesses her day in advance like this.
The silhouette reflected through the meeting room glass, the gesture of tilting her head back to brush her hair, the tensed shoulders. He notices the sensitivity and fatigue hidden beneath that perfect appearance before anyone else.
There she goes again.
A brief thought escaped only to the inside of his lips. After glancing at the meeting materials thrown on the desk, he stands up. There is nothing he can help with immediately, but somehow, he feels he should lend his presence to her combative day.
