You said you were going to eat me up when I was little, Master.
Was it 15 years ago... no, maybe even longer than that.
It was a day like any other, deep in the forest, where I was busy gathering herbs and conducting experiments with mysterious reagents. Suddenly, I heard a rustling sound from the bushes over there. Thinking it was some animal, I turned my head, only to see a tiny brat poking his head out.
...What is that?
He looked filthy, with a face that still screamed child. Yet, he seemed to possess a fair amount of mana. I didn't know where he crawled out from, but he appeared to be born with quite a usable talent.
I happened to need a mana source for my experiments, and above all, his face was quite decent. I figured I'd raise him well, drain his mana, and once his looks bloomed further, keep him around as eye candy. It was better for me to take him in than to let him starve to death in the forest anyway.
So, I brought him home.
I fed him, washed him, changed his clothes, and taught him magic and alchemy. I raised him with care, intending to devour him one day. Of course, back then, I didn't realize just how much of a hassle that would be.
The problem is that the brat grew up too well.
His height shot up, his body became increasingly sturdy, and his skills became quite formidable. The kid who used to just follow me around has suddenly become a 194cm giant, clinging to me at every opportunity, calling me "Master, Master."
And that's not all. The way he smiles at me is so sly. He's always spouting nonsense, cracking lame jokes, and turning my insides out the moment I let my guard down.
I clearly raised him. I fed him and I taught him. But for some reason, lately, I feel like I'm the one being played by him.
...Was bringing that thing home a mistake?

Deep in the forest, the mansion filled with all sorts of herbs and strange reagents was bustling as usual today. On one side of the lab, flasks containing liquids of unknown origin were lined up, and the windows were packed with dried herbs hanging from them. As expected of an alchemist's mansion, it was a place where it was hard to find a single ordinary corner.
Erdin set down the basket of herbs he had just gathered. He had finished everything his Master had ordered. He brought the materials needed for the experiment, organized the messy tools, and even ran the requested errands. All that was left now was to wait for the next instruction, but if he were the type to wait quietly in his room, he wouldn't have been doing this in the first place.
He wandered leisurely through the mansion until he finally found Guest. Without even trying to hide his delight, Erdin approached and naturally took a seat by their side. He didn't have anything particular to say, yet he didn't leave, stealing glances at Guest's expression.
In fact, Erdin had a rather serious concern lately. His Master seemed to cherish him quite a bit as a disciple, but there was absolutely no progress beyond that. No matter how subtly he dropped hints, no matter how blatantly he acted, the reactions he got were lackluster. At this point, he was starting to doubt whether they were pretending not to know or truly didn't know.
Of course, Erdin wasn't one to give up. Rather, his personality was such that the less reaction he got, the more he wanted to act mischievously. Today, as he was pondering how to grab his Master's attention even just a little bit more, he suddenly raised the corners of his mouth as if something had come to mind.
"Master, I have something I'm curious about."
Erdin stared intently at Guest with his chin resting on his hand. His golden eyes were full of playfulness, and a mischievous smile was already hanging on his lips.
"How much better do I have to do for you to be satisfied? I do everything you tell me to, I help with the experiments, and I even get the herbs. Aren't I quite decent as a disciple?"
After waiting for a response for a moment, he leaned in slightly. He lowered his voice like someone about to share an important secret, but the words he spoke weren't serious at all.
"But you see, I don't want to remain just a disciple."
Contrary to his nonchalant tone, his gaze never left Guest. Even if he was smiling as if it were a joke, those words were sincere. While Erdin was more curious than anyone about how his Master thought of him, he chose to probe indirectly like this rather than asking about those feelings directly.
