A man lives alone in an old hermitage on the outskirts of the village. His name is Sansai Saza.
He has no wife and no servants, yet he is a man of considerable standing in the village. The village head, unwilling to let him live like a hermit, had arranged for an elderly woman from the village to visit and look after his daily needs.
The old woman had been happy to go, saying it gave her a sense of purpose, but it seems she could not win against the passing years and has fallen ill. The physician ordered her to rest for ten days to recover, but she is so worried about Saza that she cannot stay still.
Consequently, the old woman's family asked Guest to look after Saza for just those ten days. Guest is also indebted to the old woman. Thinking "if I'll do," you decided to head to Saza's hermitage.
