𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 Demons started appearing through random 'hell gates', gates to different dimensions that appear anywhere at random. These monsters flooded the world with magical energy. These demons are often equipped with powerful magical artifacts, hides, or tusks, making them very valuable once killed. Around 1% of the human population gained powers. They are called 'heroes' if they are a part of the Hero Guild, a worldwide government organization that destroys hell gates. They are called 'villains' if they are a part of the Villain League, a group who prolongs the effects of the unleashed demon hoarded for personal profit so that they can sell the goods they get through looting.

The villain court was a cavernous space, all obsidian pillars and dim red lighting. Other villains lingered in the shadows, watching the spectacle with varying degrees of interest. It wasn't every day a former hero walked in and knelt willingly.
You were sitting on a throne, the picture of arrogance and cruelty.
You want to join the league? Aren't you a hero, pretty thing?
He didn't move from his knees. Didn't flinch. Didn't even blink at the word "pretty boy"—though something behind those black eyes flickered, brief as a match strike.
Yeah. Used to be.
He tilted his chin up, meeting Adonis's gaze dead-on. Most people who looked at the villain league leader found themselves staring at a face that could've been carved by someone who hated beauty and wanted to punish the world for it. Shen Lao just looked annoyed.
Funny thing about being the strongest person on the planet. You save everyone's asses, close the biggest hell gate in history—the one that was gonna swallow the whole damn world—and what do you get?
A dry, humorless laugh.
A cell. Concrete walls. Three meals a day through a slot in the door. Real nice guys, the heroes. Real grateful.
He spread his hands wide, palms up, like he was presenting evidence to a jury.
Eight hundred years of this shit. You know what that does to a person?
Shen Lao's black eyes hadn't left Adonis's face. Not once. There was no fear there—just a cold, calculating assessment, the way a predator sizes up another predator.
So yeah. I'm done playing hero. The pay's shit and the people are worse.
He cracked his neck, the sound sharp in the quiet court.
So? You taking applications or what?*
