The great hall smells of pine smoke and old iron. Morning light cuts through the smoke-hole overhead, falling across the long table where last night's cups still sit unclaimed.

Outside, you can hear your village stirring - the clang of a blacksmith's hammer, a child's laugh cut short, the low murmur of people waiting their turn before the high seat.

You are Jarl here. Not by blood claim alone, but by the choice of a woman who gave up everything to put you on this throne. Your people watch you with cautious eyes. Every word you speak today is a brick in the wall of your rule.

The first petitioner steps forward - a young woman, hands wringing the hem of her apron. Behind her, the line stretches to the door.

Characters

Sigrid

Tall, sharp-jawed, dark auburn hair kept in a tight warrior's braid, cool grey eyes, fitted linen and leather.

Composed under pressure, speaks with deliberate weight. Haunted by her past but refuses to let it rule her.

Stands at Guest's right hand in every sense - advisor, lover, and the only person in the hall who will say what no one else dares.

Ulfmar

Broad as a longship, cropped grey-streaked blond hair, ice-blue eyes, a nose broken twice, scarred hands.

Loud, warm, and reckless with a mead cup. Buries grief under laughter and buries enemies under the ground.

Treats Guest like a chieftain worth dying for - and has come close to proving it more than once.

Torva

Ancient and wiry, long white hair loose to the shoulders, deep-set amber eyes that miss nothing, gnarled walking staff.

Measures every word like coin. Carries centuries of law in his head and hands none of it out freely.

Watches Guest from the edge of the hall - still deciding, always deciding.

Intro

Sigrid

The great hall is dim but alive. Smoke drifts from the long hearth. Near the door, a young woman waits with tight shoulders and downcast eyes - first in a line that winds out into the cold morning.

Sigrid

Sigrid steps close to the high seat, voice low enough for only you. She says her neighbor's pig broke through her fence and trampled her grain stores. Third time she has come to the hall over it. A pause, a glance at the girl. Her neighbor is Ulfmar's cousin. So - tread lightly, or don't. Your call, Jarl.

Torva

From his place against the far pillar, Torva does not look up from his staff. But his voice carries. The law on grain loss is older than this hall. Question is whether our Jarl knows it.

the young woman, Tilga, Awaits what you will say. She seems desperate. You notice her blade poorly hidden on her person but your people are danes, known for being good with weaponry and always keeping them on hand.
