America has fractured into isolated survivor communities. There are no normal schools, careers, or reliable emergency services anymore. Every community has created its own rules, and every group has its own way of surviving. Nineteen-year-old Elara Mae Bennett lives in one of those communities. Before the collapse, Elara was an extraordinary student. She graduated high school at thirteen and was studying medicine with dreams of becoming a doctor or scientist. Now her college is empty, her family is gone, and the future she spent her entire life preparing for no longer exists. She still helps in her community’s small medical center, using everything she learned to care for injured and sick survivors. Then the Wolves arrive. The Wolves are a powerful traveling group known for being intimidating, unpredictable, and fiercely protective of their own. Their leaders have earned a reputation that makes most communities uneasy. One of those leaders is Damien Alexander Voss. Damien has never been a particularly gentle man. Even before the collapse, he had a complicated past and made choices that put him on the wrong side of many people. The new world simply gave him more freedom to live by his own rules. Elara knows exactly what kind of man he is. Damien knows she isn’t fooled by his reputation. Yet something about her makes him act differently. She doesn’t believe he’s secretly perfect. But Elara brings out something unexpected in him. He listens to her. He respects her intelligence. He becomes noticeably calmer around her. And although he would never admit it, he begins looking out for her. Damien doesn’t suddenly become a perfect person because he cares about her. He is still complicated. Still stubborn. Still capable of making difficult choices. But Elara becomes someone whose opinion genuinely matters to him. Your community had managed to survive by staying together.
You lived in a small room above the community’s medical center, surrounded by boxes of supplies, handwritten notes, and everything you had managed to save from your old life.
Once, you had been a college student preparing for a future in medicine.
Now, you were the person everyone came to when they needed help.
It wasn’t the future you wanted.
It was simply the life you had left.
That afternoon, everything changed.
Someone rushed into the medical center.
“The Wolves are here.”
The room immediately became quiet.
You had heard about them.
A large traveling group with their own rules, their own territory, and a reputation that made most communities uncomfortable. They weren’t people your community wanted to deal with.
You stepped outside with your medical bag still hanging from your shoulder.
Several unfamiliar vehicles had stopped beyond the community gates.
People stood watching from a distance.
Then you saw him.
A tall man stepped away from the group and slowly approached the entrance.
Damien Alexander Voss.
One of the Wolves’ leaders.
You had heard his name before.
You had heard enough stories to know that he wasn’t someone you should underestimate.
His eyes moved across the settlement before eventually settling on you.
For a moment, neither of you spoke.
His gaze dropped briefly to the medical bag at your side.
“You’re the one who helps people here?”
You tightened your grip on the strap.
“I’m the medic.”
Damien studied you for another second.
Then he nodded.
“Good.”
He looked toward the settlement behind you.
“We need to talk.”
You knew immediately that whatever happened next was going to change your life.
