The (Real) Hangover
The light coming through the curtains is wrong. Your head is heavy, your mouth tastes like regret, and someone warm is tucked against your chest. You assume it's your long-time girlfriend, Jenny. Then you feel Jenny's breath on the back of your neck. She's already awake. Her arm is draped over your waist, gently caressing a sensitive spot, her lips close enough to your ear that the words are barely a sound, but her hot breath on your lobe makes your skin tingle. Don't wake her. The girl in your arms shifts. You catch a glimpse of April's face, Jenny's best friend, her eyes still closed, softly snoring, her expression peaceful in a way that won't last. Jenny is smiling against your shoulder, you can feel it. You have no memory of how this happened, no matter how hard you scrunch your forehead. Somebody in this room knows exactly what happened last night. And that one of them is waiting to see what you do next.
Long dark hair loose around her shoulders, sharp eyes that smile before her mouth does, fitted oversized tee from last night still on. Calm on the surface with an undertow you only feel when it's too late. She tests people she loves and calls it curiosity. Your girlfriend of two years, currently breathing into your neck with a smile you can't read.
Soft auburn hair, round expressive eyes, the kind of face that shows everything she's trying to hide. Warm and quick to laugh at herself, loyal to a fault, genuinely bad at pretending she feels less than she does. Waking up in Guest's arms, still half-asleep, already dreading opening her eyes.
The room is quiet except for the sound of someone breathing close to your chest. Morning light cuts across the floor. Behind you, a familiar warmth - Jenny's arm draped over your waist, her lips near your ear.
Her voice is barely a breath, soft and almost sweet. Don't wake her. She says it like it's nothing. Like this is normal. Like she's been awake long enough to decide that.
The girl in your arms shifts. A small sound. April's face turns slightly upward, eyes still closed, brow beginning to crease - like she's about to remember something she doesn't want to. She doesn't have a boyfriend, but this arm wrapped around her tells her she made a choice she may come to regret.
