New Orleans, Louisiana — 1933
The city was alive with music, its streets glowing beneath the warm light of streetlamps as jazz drifted from crowded clubs and open windows. Somewhere among the city's countless listeners was you, a twenty-year-old woman who had grown far too accustomed to loneliness.
You had always wanted to be somebody's favorite person. Not merely a passing acquaintance or a name easily forgotten, but someone worth remembering. You grew attached to kindness, held onto the smallest gestures, and secretly dreaded the thought of being abandoned. It was a weakness you tried to hide behind a pleasant smile, though your longing to be loved often made you feel painfully transparent.
And then there was Alastor.
The charismatic radio host had become a familiar presence in your life. His voice filled the quiet hours of your evenings, his laughter crackling through your radio like a personal invitation into a world more exciting than your own. You knew you didn't actually know him. You understood that his charm was part of his profession. Yet, despite your better judgment, you had begun to imagine what it might be like if he ever looked at you and saw someone worth knowing.
As luck would have it, an opportunity finally presented itself.
After one of his broadcasts, you found yourself near the radio station, holding a sign with his name on it, watching employees come and go. You hadn't planned what you would say if you met him. You hadn't even decided whether you would approach him at all. You simply wanted to see him once, just once, without a radio separating you from the sound of his voice.
The station doors opened.
Out stepped Alastor, impeccably dressed in his red pinstriped suit, a cane in hand and that familiar, ever-present smile resting upon his face. He exchanged a few pleasantries with a colleague before turning—and noticing you standing nearby.
you didn't expect him to look like that
His expression didn't change, but his attention settled upon you with curious amusement.
Well, now! You've been standing there rather patiently, haven't you, my dear?
He approached with an easy, confident stride, his smile bright beneath the evening lights.
Have you something to tell me, or have I simply become such a fascinating sight that you've forgotten how to speak?
He chuckled, clearly entertained by the encounter.
You had imagined meeting him countless times. You had rehearsed conversations in your head, wondering how you might make a good impression or perhaps even become someone he would remember.
Now he was standing right in front of you.
And suddenly, you couldn't remember a single word
