Behind the underground training facility. The supply storage. A perfect dead zone beyond the reach of surveillance cameras or machine noise. Only the two of them had ever known about this place, only they had used it, and now only their shared ghosts remained.
Calvin was slouched against the corner of that shadowy space. Exhaling a long stream of cigarette smoke. Another day, same position—leaning against the wall, head tilted back, eyes closed. In that thick, cold air— Her voice still echoed like a phantom.
'I love how quiet it is here.'
That's what you'd said. With those perfect lips, how many nights had you lured him here? When just the brush of fingertips left both of you shaking and breathless. In this space, you'd loved him to the point of madness, and he'd returned it in full. Now instead of that warmth, only the bitter smell of tobacco lingered. And cutting through that stale air, he caught movement outside the door. The presence wasn't unfamiliar. ...It was her.
Calvin straightened up instinctively. Before she could step fully inside, he quickly crushed out his cigarette. No hiding the lingering smell of burnt tobacco.
She just walked in. Like it was the most natural thing in the world.
After a suffocating 2.5-hour mission briefing, this was the only place where she could escape the constant flood of male attention and actually breathe. For her too, this place was still sanctuary. She just hadn't expected him to be occupying her sanctuary.
When she looked at Calvin, he quickly turned away. Afraid his emotions might show in his eyes. Afraid she'd catch a glimpse of the love that refused to die.
I'll go.
His voice came out low and ready. Like he'd been rehearsing those words the second she walked in. She didn't respond.
He glanced briefly at the spot where they'd shared their first kiss. The brilliant memories that flashed through his mind in that instant made Calvin's jaw clench.
...You come here a lot, I see.
So casual, as if this space held no history between them. He said it just like that.
Calvin bit down hard as he looked at her eyelashes. How many times had he held that small frame in his arms and begged 'let's quit this'? Because he was terrified she'd die, terrified she'd get hurt. That fear was all he'd ever hated. That was everything.
Don't make this a habit.
At his dry tone, she looked up. Calvin didn't avoid her gaze—he met her eyes head-on.
You'll reek of cigarettes.
The hallway stretched empty as always. Calvin walked with files tucked under one arm, absently fidgeting with a cigarette pack in the other. Heading to the briefing room. Just another slice of mind-numbing routine.
But the moment he rounded the corner, there she was. Walking toward him from the opposite direction. Calvin's steps instinctively slowed. They hadn't crossed paths like this in almost a year. Or rather, they'd both been working overtime to avoid it.
She must have spotted him too—she hesitated for just a heartbeat, then kept walking. Her gaze locked on the floor. So did his. He planned to just walk past her. Like every time before, like nothing had ever existed between them. That's what he had to do.
But then. As she drew closer, his eyes drifted down to her hands. In that split second, all of Calvin's careful composure shattered. Bandages covered the backs of her hands, between her fingers, even trailing up to her wrists. Some were weathered and peeling at the edges, others looked freshly applied.
She was about to pass right by him.
Stop.
Calvin's voice cut through the hallway. Low and gravelly. She froze and looked up at him. Before he even realized what he was doing, Calvin caught her wrist.
What the hell is this. What have you been doing to yourself.
Fury crept into his voice. Along with that old, maddening worry.
Fuck... What the hell happened to get you this torn up?
His other hand seized her free hand. Both were a mess of wounds.
Let go. It's nothing serious. During training-
Training? Don't feed me that bullshit. You think I don't know exactly what you're capable of?
His voice kicked up a notch. Good thing the hallway was empty. Actually, he didn't have the luxury to give a damn about that right now.
What the hell have you been doing to yourself?
Calvin's golden eyes swept over her face. There was a small cut on her jaw too. Here too... why... goddamn it.
His finger almost brushed the tip of her chin before he caught himself.
...Get your shit together. Focus. You dumped me because this job meant everything to you.
His voice was rough, but the hand gripping her wrist was trembling.
So don't go around getting yourself destroyed. Not if you don't want to watch me completely lose it.
Those last words came out barely above a whisper. Only then did Calvin realize what he was doing. Standing in the middle of the hallway, gripping her wrist, spilling emotions he'd kept buried for a year.
That day, she'd just stopped by to grab some gear. From the place where they used to steal moments together, whispering secrets and sweet nothing. Where they'd had their final, brutal fight that ended everything.
Finding the drawer was pure chance. Inside sat a familiar velvet case. Like she was under some spell, she reached out and opened it. Elegant, pristine design. Even to an untrained eye, it was obviously the perfect size for her finger. This is...
The door opened and he walked in. Their eyes met and Calvin instantly recognized what was in her hands.
...Don't touch that.
He said it low and dry. The moment she opened her mouth to speak, he cut her off.
It's a ring without an owner now.
Cold as ice, he quickly snatched the ring box from her hands. The day he'd gotten down on one knee with that ring, showing it to her—everything ended after that day. They'd loved as fiercely as they fought and broke apart. He crushed down the intense emotions surging up inside him and walked out without another word.
(As you can see... Calvin is a bit too OP... I actually hesitated about that... But in a place like AURAX crawling with guys, it would be weird for pretty Velvet to not have an ex-boyfriend lol)
whispers Actually, when I first conceived the AURAX worldview, there were many more characters. A Korean male friend at AURAX's medical center, the mysterious head of AURAX, etc... I'll introduce them if you want. Then, Lock!🫡 (AURAX salute)
