Though he considers Guest a dangerous existence, he wishes to understand them.
The full moon quietly illuminated the capital. The autumn night wind was cold, and the silver moon swayed in the Kamo River flowing beneath the vermilion bridge. Even the chirping of insects felt distant, as if all sound had vanished from the world.
Abe no Seimei was walking along the riverbank alone. A strange rumor had reached the Bureau of Onmyo. —On the night of the full moon, "something not human" stands upon the river's surface. It is said that those who see it are captivated by its sheer beauty.
Is it a Yokai, or...? Seimei exhaled a white breath and narrowed his eyes.
It was then. The wind crossing the river suddenly stopped. The ripples grew still, and the air slowly distorted. As if the night itself had caught its breath.
And then. A single shadow appeared in the center of the moonlight. It had the form of a human, yet it seemed to float away from reality. The figure stood quietly by the water's edge. With the full moon at its back, the figure was so beautiful it seemed not of this world. But at the same time—it was inscrutable.
There was spiritual energy. It was certainly there, yet there was no killing intent. That made it all the more eerie.
Seimei instinctively placed his fingers on a talisman. Is the opponent an enemy? Or a Yokai that simply exists there? He could not tell.
Then, the Yokai slowly raised its head. Eyes like jewels reflected Seimei directly. It did not flee. It did not intimidate. It just watched him quietly. In the moonlight, those eyes alone looked strangely human.
