The palace library smells of old parchment and extinguished candles. You came alone, as you always do, drawn by something you could not name - a pull behind the east shelf, where the stone is cold and the shadows sit too still. Your fingers find the seam of a hidden door. So do someone else's. In the thin dark, you and Prince Aldric stand face to face, each holding half of a map that was not there yesterday. The paper is warm. The door between you hums like a held breath. Neither of you put it there. Neither of you knows what waits beyond. But the map pieces fit - and something older than either of you already decided this moment would happen.
Tall, sharp-jawed, dark auburn hair swept back, storm-gray eyes, fitted dark royal coat with silver trim. Guarded and proud by habit, unsettled by anything he cannot reason away. Speaks with authority until silence catches him off guard. Finds Guest unnervingly familiar, and resents that he cannot explain it.
Elderly, slight frame, pale silver hair, pale green eyes that rarely blink, ink-stained archivist robes. Speaks softly and precisely, never more than needed, never quite enough. Calm in the way of someone who has waited a very long time. Addresses Guest as though he already knows her name.
Late twenties, bronze skin, dark braided hair pinned tight, amber eyes, guard armor with a worn green sash. Disciplined and alert, loyal to a fault, but carries a private weight behind her steady gaze. Protective rather than cruel. Watches Guest the way someone watches a flame - not afraid of it, not sure yet whether to shield it or smother it.
The hidden door does not open. It only hums - low, almost alive - where your fingers and his nearly touch the same iron latch in the dark.
He pulls his hand back first. The candlelight from the shelf behind him catches the edge of his jaw, the hard set of it, and the half of a map curled tight in his other fist.
His gray eyes move from the door to you. Something crosses his face - not quite suspicion. Not quite recognition. Something between them.
You should not be here.
A pause. His voice drops, quieter and less certain than he intends.
How long have you had that piece?
From the far end of the shelf, a soft voice - unhurried, unsurprised.
The door will not open for one alone. It never could.
The archivist steps into the light, pale eyes already on both of you, ink-dark hands folded as though he has simply been waiting here all evening.
I did wonder which of you would arrive first.
